Hello everyone, and welcome to the website for Puritan Search. Puritan Search is a fully searchable database of over 980 Puritans and Non-Conformists, containing the full texts of over 6,600 works. That is about 649,000 pages of Puritan and Non-Conformists literature! This software allows one to, within seconds, search this entire corpus for keywords, phrases, authors, dates, or scriptures. This software also allows you to selectively choose whether you want to search all 980 or so authors, or a single author, or any combination in between.
This software has been made available to the public free of charge, and anybody is free to download it, and duplicate it, though selling for commercial use or profit is strictly prohibited. Our hope in offering this free, is that anybody, anywhere, regardless of income, can mine these treasures without finances potentially being a hindrance. We especially have in mind Pastors who would not only use it for their personal study, but would also like to make copies and hand them out to their congregations without the need to pay for personal licenses for every congregant. The Missionary, who may want a tool to give out to Pastors in developing countries, or those Pastors themselves if they stumble upon this software on the web. Also, the Student or Teacher/Professor, who may not have much money for another specialty software to save themselves the financial burden of obtaining this resource tool and utilizing it for research or studies. Or, the Layman or Laywoman who enjoys Puritan works and would like to have a tool to dig deeper within them for general devotional purposes.
This software can be run natively on any OS; whether Windows, Mac, or Linux. It can also be simply unzipped and copy and pasted onto a Flash Drive for portability. There are no strings attached, we only ask that if this has blessed you, tell someone about it. Our goal is to see the proliferation of Puritan literature in the world, because we strongly believe that this period in church history, collectively, despite certain nuances, is one of the most blessed ages of doctrinal orthodoxy. Our hope is that this would bless you and help you dig deeper into Puritan thought.
We would like to first thank God the Father, our Lord Jesus Christ, and the Holy Spirit, who led and guided our hands to create this; for this is His work, for His glory alone. For Zotero, DocFetcher, Evans-TCP and EEBO-TCP; of which without, assimilating, creating, or having the ability to search these documents would not have been possible. To the many scholars, both past and present, who preserved the names of these men and women of God, we stand on your shoulders. For Project Puritas and the countless hours leading up to Puritan Search becoming a reality. And for those of you who have prayed for us that we wouldn’t tire in this effort to bring these works to the masses, free of charge.

Finally, if updating from version 1.0 to version 1.1, simply download and extract as you did the first time, then delete the old version. New authors have only been added to this version; nothing has been removed from the previous.
Below is a short 2.5 minute tutorial showing the process of downloading and getting Puritan Search installed on your computer.
Whats New in Puritan Search 1.1
In Version 1.1 we have added the addition of American, Dutch, & Scottish Puritans as they were available. This is an addition of 126 new authors and about 600 works! Due to popular consensus, we have added J. Edwards, T. Boston, and G. Whitefield as well. We have also included the link to the respective work in EEBO-TCP & Evans-TCP within each work in Puritan Search; so, if there is a question on a word correction, or, if you need a scholarly citation, you can go direct to the source in its original context.
Within Puritan Search, you will find an index tree listed in four categories, American Puritans, Dutch Puritans, English Puritans, and Scottish Puritans. There is no preferential order to these, its just that the program indexes alphabetically. From there, you can branch alphabetically, then further to individual authors. You can choose to search within a regional category, an alphabetical one, or an individual one; or a mixture of any of these three, or, all of the authors at once.
Project Puritas Note on Texts Contained
Project Note on the Corrections by Project Puritas included in Puritan Search.
The initial text contents of this application were downloaded from the Early English Books Online – Text Creation Partnership (EEBO-TCP) and Evans Early American Imprint Collection - Text Creation Partnership (Evans-TCP) websites. Originally, the books were manually transcribed in a character for character manner from their facsimile originals, and since there was no standard spelling during that time, it can be a bit cumbersome to read; with variations such as "unlesse", "vnlesse", and "vnles" etc. appearing regularly.
With that in mind, our project has intended to clean up those books as much as possible and make them more accessible to the interested reader. A list of variant spellings and their corrections was utilized to clean up the text, totaling over 24,000 unique misspelling corrections; but this is only as comprehensive as the list itself. Because of the nature of the original transcription, some words have missing characters or places where the original language (e.g., Hebrew & Greek) was not transcribed. There are some parts where text is missing not being preserved in the original documents used for transcription. The original text from EEBO-TCP & Evans-TCP also contained linked footnotes and these have not been incorporated.
Although this is admittedly no substitute for a properly proofread and scholarly edition of these texts, we believe that the result is a body of work which is far more accessible, particularly for searching and reading, than its predecessor (though our immeasurable thankfulness and debt to EEBO-TCP & Evans-TCP cannot be expressed.) The documents have been cleaned and presented to the best of our present ability, in what we hope is a pleasing and useful format for the vast majority of Christian brothers and sisters who desire to access, search, and read these spiritually nourishing works.
For the sake of this collection; the majority of its works are confined to a theo-historical approach to Puritan research. This means while there were some Arminian Puritans, and Catholic, Quaker, Brownist, Pilgrim, and Unitarian Non-Conformists, they were omitted if detected during the author selection process. In this collection, we have tried to include only theologically Reformed, and historically pertinent (1550-1700) Puritans & Non-Conformists, this includes those seeking to reform the CoE, as well as Calvinistic Baptists, Presbyterian, Independent, and Congregational Non-Conformists; also, CoE or Anglican clergy that were sympathetic to the cause. Beginning in version 1.1 we have also added authors from the American Puritanism period. Though these are dated later than many of their English, Scottish, and Dutch counterparts, many view them as an extension of traditional Puritanism established by English Puritans fleeing their native land because of religious persecution there. This is not an exhaustive collection of Puritan & Non-Conformist works, but a collection of those pertinent works which were located in EEBO-TCP & Evans-TCP which enables the searching thereof by their conversion from facsimile to text. We would also like to thank Grace Gems for their tremendous work of transcribing a majority of Thomas Boston's works, and also offering them to the public with unrestricted usage. Without such effort his works wouldn't be included in Puritan Search.
However, a word of warning: The Puritans and Non-Conformists were a very diverse group of people and their age was characterized with godliness, but also much upheaval, disputation and strife. They disagreed on many doctrines and some of these works contain less orthodox or Scriptural views than others. The reader is strongly advised to read with discernment, particularly if it is unknown whether an author is trustworthy in the realm of doctrinal orthodoxy. We have added the dates of each author, as we were best able to investigate, if applicable, so individual research into each author is possible before one goes full in on gleaning from them. Also, the included authors are not just a list of random names taken from that period. Each name was taken from an academic source more knowledgeable on the subject than most of us; including, but not limited to:
Dr. C. McMahon's "Puritan Bio's List" from A Puritans Mind, Beeke & Pedersons "Meet the Puritans," Brooks 3 vol. "Lives of the Puritans," PRDL (Post-Reformation Digital Library) "Puritans List," PRTS (Puritan Reformed Theological Seminary) "Puritans List," Lyon G. Turners "Original records of early non-conformity under persecution," the DNB (Dictionary of National Biography) "Puritans and Non-Conformist" listings, Calamys "Non-Conformist Memorial," the "Encyclopedie Nadere Reformatie," the "All of the Writings of the Scottish Covenanters" section from Reformed Books Online, Sibley's "Harvard Graduates" vols.1-5 (or 1642-1701,) and Puritan suggestions from the online forum The Puritan Board.
Finally, please forgive our eagerness in the midst of imperfection in offering such errant publications. Given the sheer number of texts, time constraints, and other duties; this is the best we can offer for now; yet, knowing the spiritual treasures within these pages, we pray that this effort, though feeble, will still result in the edification of His Church, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, to the glorification of our Gracious God.

*** No part of the texts contained were altered in any way by AI (Artificial Intelligence,) nor were any such measures used in any part of the text corrective process. The corrections were done manually, by producing a specific programming script and list of alternate words, then ran through the entire corpus to make the corrections. The only alterations to the text were to correct spelling; no other changes were made.
Instructions on Use & Search Queries
Query Syntax
This page gives an overview of the available query syntax, going from "basic" to "advanced". The query syntax is provided by Apache Lucene, Puritan Search’s underlying search engine, and it's described in a more technical manner on Lucene's query syntax page.
Boolean Operators
Puritan Search supports the boolean operators OR, AND and NOT. If words are concatenated without boolean operators, Puritan Search will by default treat them as if they were concatenated with OR. If you don't like that, you can go to the preferences and set AND as the default.
Instead of OR, AND and NOT, you can also use ||, && and '-' (minus symbol), respectively. You can use parentheses to group certain expressions. Here are some examples:
Query Resulting documents contain...
dog OR cat either dog, or cat, or both
dog AND cat both dog and cat
dog cat (by default equivalent to the query dog OR cat)
dog NOT cat dog, but not cat
-dog cat cat, but not dog
(dog OR cat) AND mouse mouse, and either dog or cat, or both
Searching is case-insensitive
Puritan Search does not distinguish between lowercase and uppercase characters, so it doesn't matter if the words you enter are completely lowercase, or completely uppercase, or a mix of both. The only exceptions are the keywords OR, AND, NOT and TO, which must always be entered in uppercase. (For the TO keyword, see the 'range searches' section below.)
Phrase Searches and Required Terms
To search for a phrase (i.e. a sequence of words), put the phrase in double quotes. To indicate that the documents to search for must contain a particular word, put a '+' in front of the word. Of course you can combine these constructs with boolean operators and parentheses. Again, some examples:
Query Resulting documents contain...
"dog cat mouse" the words dog, cat and mouse, in that particular order
+dog cat definitely dog, and maybe also cat
"dog cat" AND mouse the phrase dog cat, and the word mouse
+dog +cat (equivalent to the query dog AND cat)
Wildcards
Question marks ('?') and asterisks ('*') can be used to indicate that some characters are unknown. The question mark stands for exactly one unknown character, while the asterisk stands for zero or more unknown characters. Examples:
Query Resulting documents contain...
luc? lucy, luca, ...
luc* luc, lucy, luck, lucene, ...
*ene* lucene, energy, generator, ...
Note: If wildcards are used as the first character of a word, the search tends to be slower on average. This is due to how the index is structured: It's as if you tried to look up someone's phone number, and you only know that person's first name. So, in the example above, searching for *ene* will probably be slower than the other searches because *ene* starts with a wildcard.
Fuzzy Searches
Fuzzy searches allow you to search for words similar to a given word. For example, if you search for roam~, Puritan Search will find documents containing words like foam and roams.
Additionally, you can append a similarity threshold between 0 and 1, like so: roam~0.8. The higher the threshold, the higher the similarity of the returned matches. Leaving out the threshold is the same as using the default value of 0.5.
Proximity Searches
Proximity searches allow you to find words that are within a specific distance away from each other. To do a proximity search, put a tilde ('~') at the end of a phrase, followed by a distance value. — Note that this is syntactically similar to fuzzy searches. For example, to search for documents containing wikipedia and lucene within 10 words of each other, type in: "wikipedia lucene"~10
Boosting Terms
You can influence the relevance sorting of the results by assigning custom weights to words. Example: If you enter dog^4 cat instead of just dog cat, documents containing dog will receive a higher score and therefore move closer to the top of the results.
Although the boost factor must be positive, it can be less than 1 (e.g. 0.2). If no boost factor is specified, the default value 1 is used.
Field Searches
By default, Puritan Search will search in all the textual data it is capable of extracting, i.e. the contents, the filenames and the metadata of the documents. However, you can also restrict your searches to the filename and/or certain metadata fields. For example, to search for documents whose titles contain wikipedia, enter: title: wikipedia.
Field search can be combined with other search constructs, e.g.:
Phrase search using quotes, e.g. title: "dog cat", or using parentheses, e.g. title:(dog cat). If you omit the quotes and parentheses, only dog will be matched against the title, not cat.
Wildcards: title: dog* will, for instance, match occurrences of doggy in the title.
Which fields are available generally depends on the document format, but you can use this as a rule of thumb:
Titles: title
Files: filename, title, author
Emails: subject, sender, recipients
Range Searches
Puritan Search allows searching for words that are lexicographically between two other words. For example, the word beta lies between alpha and gamma. So, if you want to list all documents that contain words between alpha and gamma, type in: [alpha TO gamma].
When using the square brackets, the range query is inclusive, i.e. alpha and gamma are included in the results. To do an exclusive range search, use curly brackets instead: {alpha TO gamma}
You may combine range searches and field searches as follows: title:{alpha TO gamma}. This will restrict the range search to the title field.
Tips, Tricks, & Potential Issues
Hello. In this section we will be shedding light on some Tips, Tricks, & Potential Issues of the program that may help to better facilitate your usage of Puritan Search. Below are some of the things that stand out to us. Please feel free to contact us if you find something that you feel has made your research within the program that much better.
When you open the program, under the "Search Scope" bar, you will see four categories of Puritans & Non-Conformists. This is the list of Puritans & Non-Conformists first listed by regional heading. If you click the ">" symbol in front of each category, it will expand to an alphabetical listing within that region of individuals consolidated within an A-Z classification. **It is perfectly normal if some letters are missing; that just means no individuals with that letter were listed in that category.** If you again select the ">" symbol next to the letter of the last name of the individual you are looking for, it will expand to reveal all of the individuals within that region, with the last name that starts with that letter; displaying all the individuals by last name first, and first name last, ending with their date of birth and their death, or date of their activity if it is known.
There are a couple ways you can search. You can right click, select "check all," and this will select all the regions and individuals to run your search query in. Or, you can right click, select "uncheck all" and either select a region, a letter of the alphabet within a region, such as "A," "B", or "C," or, expand those alphabetical headings, and only select the single, or multiple authors you wish to run your query in. You can select multiple regions, or only multiple letters within each region, or only multiple authors, within certain letters, within certain regions...or, anything in between! For example, if you select an alphabetical letter only, it will only run a search query for all the authors within that alphabetical heading. If you select a single or multiple authors, it will only run a search query within it or them.
While we have set the "Search" section in the order we thought most beneficial, you can rearrange the "Filename/Authors/Title/Score" sequence to your specific liking. So, say you would like the "Authors" to be first in the sequence, all you would need to do is simply go to the tab that says "Authors," left click and hold, and drag it over to the beginning of the sequence then let go. This will switch what was there with what you are putting there; and you can do this in any combination of the headings. Just an FYI. The "Score" tab is to let you know which works in the query contain the highest percentage of results relative to the size of the work.
In the results pane, for some, the text may not be the preferred font or size to ones liking. To adjust this, you can go to the upper right hand corner of the application, where you see the duel gear wheels, and this is the preference button. If you left click it, it will open, and there you can select a different font, font size, or color of highlighting for results.
To the right of the Preference tab, there is a Minimize tab. On some systems, clicking this will minimize the program and place it in the Hidden Icons tab in your Taskbar. While it may look like the program closed, because the normal tab will now be missing; in most cases the program is still running, but has been moved there. Upon opening it from the hidden Icons tab, the normal Puritan Search tab will reappear in your Taskbar.
In the Search pane, under the "Title" heading, if you double click the HTML, it will open in a separate window in your web browser. From there, you can use Google Translate to translate the work into any of the applicable languages provided. In Windows, once you have translated the work, you can use "Ctrl + F" to open a search bar, where you can search that work in the language you have selected.
Say for instance, you are reading an entire work in the program, and you have to close the program for some reason. Since the program does not have a native bookmarking option, there is a pretty simple work-around. All you have to do is write down or remember the three or four words at the beginning of the place you are leaving off, and when going back to there, select that author alone to search in. Then enter those exact words within quotations " " and it will take you to the place within that work you left off at. This enables you to read entire works within the program without having to worry about always having to keep the tab open.
If you would like to see the works of a specific author only; you can go to that author, right click on it, and select "List Documents." This will list the documents of that author in the search pane for individual reading, or searching within. But, as an FYI, if the author is not selected by not checking beside him/her, if you run a search query, it will search for everything checked and not just what is listed by an unchecked/selected author.
*** Warning *** When you right click to see the option for "List Documents" there will also be the option to "Open Folder." It is best not to do this, or mess with the files in the folder. Since all the indexes are created with "relative paths," if you accidently delete a file, then try to reapply it with another copy, it may not work. And since the option to delete indexes is disabled natively; the option to view the work will still appear in the index, but when selecting, it will not work since the relative path has been broken. Unless you know exactly what you are doing by choosing this option, it is best to avoid the "Open Folder" option all together.
When selecting text from Puritan Search, and copy & pasting into another document, you will notice it retains the formatting from within the program. To clear this formatting, in Word, you can go to Find & Replace, enter ^p in the Find Bar, and then select the Replace With Bar but leave blank. Then select Replace All, and it will be formatted properly. In Libre Office, you can go to Edit, select Find & Replace, and in the Find Bar enter $ and then select the Replace Bar, and within it, push the space button once; or, enter a Space in the Replace Bar. Then, make sure you select the box Regular Expressions, then select the Replace All button. Within the corrected text, you will see lightly colored squiggly lines in the newly formatted text. These will not show up when you save or export the document, or copy and paste elsewhere.
Since Puritan Search needs a Java Runtime Environment installed to work properly; for those creating packages on Flash Drives where internet is inaccessible, or the ability to install it natively on a computer via download might not be viable; there is a Portable Java Runtime Environment that enables Puritan Search to work without JRE natively installed. That can be downloaded here https://portableapps.com/apps/utilities/java_portable
If somebody, for academic reasons or otherwise, needs the ability to have more specific citations than the authors name and the name of the work, the links to the original sources have been provided within the works themselves; at the top of each work located within Puritan Search. (starting with version 1.1)
During the transcription process, and because the works included were hand-typed to resemble as closely the original facsimiles as possible, unfortunately the letters " l , s , f , " are sometimes wrongly placed and interchanged. While this isn't prevalent in most of the transcribed text, it does occur. So if you run into a place where a word doesn't quite make sense, it may be because of this issue.
In the rare case that Puritan Search doesn't work properly on your specific OS (Operating System,) you might want to check troubleshooting as it relates to the Open-Source search engine "DocFetcher." Puritan Search was created using this search engine. Puritan Search does not have a dedicated tech team to resolve various specific technical inquiries. With this being the case, the next best course of action is to seek advice online from those who are either experts in their perspective OS's, or troubleshooting the search engine it is built upon. Some troubleshooting tips for DocFetcher can be found here: https://sourceforge.net/p/docfetcher/wiki/FAQ/
When using Puritan Search, it is best used in a "Maximized" position; or, the position that takes the entirety of the computer screen. While there are no present known issues going from "Maximized" to "Minimized," or, from where the program takes the entirety of the screen to where the program disappears into the Task Bar; there is a known issue of the "splitting of text" if one attempts to "Resize" the program to fit within the screen without taking up its entirety. The text is fully readable, it is just within the program, it adjusts to the frame change by splitting the text at sporadic intervals. This can make for cumbersome research and can be avoided by simply "Maximizing" the program when in use, and "Minimizing" it when not in use.

The 6,600+ Works in Puritan Search Available for Free Download.
The 6,600+ works in Puritan Search, are available in PDF, DOCX, EPUB, and HTML formats. These were corrected and formatted by Logan West to the best of his current ability, and provided at no cost for those interested in putting them on devices, reading the works in their entirety outside of the program, or publishers who would like to use them as a base to create formal works. Below is also a list of all of the titles (shortened for convenience) within the program, and available for direct download in the formats listed above. To access these texts, please follow the below link to the website.
For Publishers, or those thinking about producing corrected texts of these works; we have also created an "Error List" of the most common non-spelling errors within the Project Puritas Corpus. This should provide a nice overview of the potential effort each text will take to produce a "clean" rendering for publication. This list can be found here: Error List . For those using the program, do not let this error list dissuade you. We rendered approx. 648,953 pages of text. The average word count for a page is about 500 words. The entire amount of errors in the error list is 2,581,305 (including allotting 500 words per page for the estimated 1,355 "missing pages" in the corpus); yet, the amount of words contained in the corpus is around 324,476,500 words. This produces an error margin for the entire corpus; and thus the program, at just 0.8%. Also keep in mind that the greatest amount of errors in the corpus came from the category that signifies a missing letter in a word, and not an entire word itself. That category alone came in at 1,062,634 errors; which is 41% of all errors in the corpus. These words in most cases are easily discernible given the remaining letters, and the context in which they are found.
